Staying in Touch to Ensure Home Care Safety for Elders

If you are getting together with family over the holidays this year, your visit will mean a lot to your senior relatives. Being surrounded by family, and knowing that they’re cared for, can lighten the spirits of an older adult and decrease loneliness and depression. To maintain the holiday sentiment year-round, family members who live a distance from their senior relatives need to make an effort to stay in tough even once the holidays are over.

It doesn’t take much; little things will go a long way in making your loved one feel cared for. To keep the senior informed of things happening with your family, send letters, postcards and family photos; make regular phone calls and allow them the opportunity to talk about themselves; or send a ‘just because’ gift when something that reminds them of you catches your eye.

Also provide them with a way to reach you, so they know you’re always there for them, even when you’re away from home. A cell phone number, email address, or location of where you will be when you’re away will keep them connected.

We make an effort every holiday to make the important people in our lives feel special, but why stop there? Let your loved ones know they’re in your hearts and minds year-round.
