Senior Tips to Achieve Goals

With a growing senior population, home care Phoenix knows many aging adults are searching for ways to reinvent themselves and reach new life goals. Some of these goals may be quite simple, yet others can be difficult to achieve. The list below contains some useful tips that can be used by seniors when trying to attain new goals this year.

1. Try to be more conscious of what you eat. While sweets are hard to resist, try eating a piece of fruit instead of candy. It will satisfy your craving for sugar and is much healthier.

2. Buy a scale for the bathroom. This will help monitor your weight. You can even use a journal to keep track of any changes. A good scale will help you through your weight-loss journey.

3. Increase physical activity. Seniors do not need to join a gym. A simple short walk each day will help burn extra calories. In addition, that walk can help keep your heart healthy.  Exercise also increases your mood, so not only will it have physical benefits, but your mental health will improve as well.

4. Discuss weight loss plans with a doctor. You want to make sure your diet is providing you with the intake you need to stay healthy yet at the same time will help you lose weight.

The Importance of Preventative Care for Seniors

Many seniors put off preventative care in the United States because of cost. Without adequate insurance, when paying out of pocket, any seemingly “unnecessary” expense is often one that’s to be avoided. However, preventative medical care can actually prevent future health complications which can result in much more serious physical and financial problems. That’s why the CDC has begun a program to encourage those approaching their senior years to seek preventative medical care between the ages of 50 to 64.

Preventative medical services that older adults can benefit from include:

• Vaccinations  - middle-aged adults and seniors should receive routine vaccines for illnesses like influenza pneumococcal disease

• Blood tests and screening – routine doctor’s visits should be encouraged which allow medical professionals to monitor cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels which can both prevent and allow for early diagnosis of health issues

• Technological screening – the technology today allows for less invasive screening for conditions like breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer and should be done regularly, dependent upon family history, age and the advice of a doctor

Older adults may put off preventative care in order to reduce their costs, but by following through with preventative steps they can secure their future health and costs that can arise from the treatment of much more serious medical conditions.

7 Ways to Convince a Senior to Accept Help

After a long life of independence and the freedom to take control over their own lives, many seniors dread getting older and getting to a point where they need to accept help from a family member or professional caregiver. Agreeing that help is needed is a big step for Phoenix seniors, and it can take a while to help get your loved ones to that point, even when their health or safety is at risk.

Here are 7 ways that you can convince your senior to accept home care help:

1. Remember change is difficult for everyone – their resistance might be frustrating, but think about how you would feel in the same situation

2. Give him/her time to come around – introduce changes slowly, but don’t force them. Eventually, the changes if for your senior’s benefit will be more accepted, once they get past denying they need help

3. Keep on trying – if you try to introduce a change and it’s not accepted, wait and try again. Sometimes even 15 minutes can make a world of difference

4. Keep them involved in decisions – let your senior know he/she does have a say in making decisions about care. However, do try and be persuasive about introducing care options

5. Offer a trial period – if they are resistant, persuade your senior to give your suggestion a try. A trial period with a home caregiver or with you helping around the house may help them to realize how much it can ease their burden

6. Present it as help for them – when suggesting you help them out or hire a caregiver, don’t present it as a result of their limitations, tell them it’s to have someone available to clean up around the house so they don’t feel obligated, or to help with moving of heavy objects

7. Know when to stop pushing – remember, that despite your concerns, your senior is still someone who is capable and allowed to make their own decisions. If you have tried the above to no avail, no when to stop pushing otherwise you might risk your relationship

Sun City & Scottsdale Family Caregivers Stress

Home Cooking for Seniors - a Pressure Cooker of Stress for Caregivers of Older Adults

Adult daughters – who typically serve as home cooks for seniors – are feeling the heat in the kitchen, according to a recent study of family caregivers.  The stress is especially high for adult children who are caring and cooking for someone with several nutritional risk factors.

Research conducted for the local caregiving company Home Instead Senior Care revealed caring for an older person who has three or more nutritional risk factors is tied to increased stress levels.  Of the caregivers who rated their lives as extremely stressful, 67 percent were caring for loved ones with three or more nutritional risk factors compared with 33 percent of caregivers whose seniors had fewer than three nutritional risk factors.

Adult children caring for an older adult (average age 81) reported the top three nutritional risks as:

1. Three or more prescribed or over-the-counter drugs per day.

2. An illness or condition that made the senior change his or her diet.

3. Having lost or gained more than 10 pounds in the past six months without trying.

That’s why Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with national nutrition experts from the University of Maryland and Duke University Medical Center to promote healthy, stress-free grocery shopping and meal preparation tips and recipes for families in New Haven.

Choosing Independence by Opting for Senior Home Care

Phoenix families often ask what the benefits are of hiring a senior caregiver to provide home care in order to understand why they should do it. The benefits are endless, so the question really should be more, why shouldn’t you hire a senior caregiver? Hiring an in home caregiver gives seniors the option of remaining in their own homes, and maintaining some level of independence they might not otherwise have if they were to move to a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Home caregivers for seniors can also change the lives of family caregivers, who can find themselves devoting their lives and their time to care for a loved one. Family caregivers don’t need to give up their responsibilities, but with the help of a senior caregiver, can get the break that they need from someone who is able to allow a senior to maintain their chosen lifestyle, schedule and routines rather than have their world turned upside down just because they’re getting older.

Hiring a senior caregiver to help a loved one at home is about providing them the independence they deserve and allowing them to age with dignity while maintaining the way of life that they’ve chosen for themselves. Giving it all up would be too grave a loss, but with the option of home care, it doesn’t have to come to that for Phoenix seniors.

Preparing to Be a Family Caregiver

The decision to become a family caregiver for an aging parent in the Phoenix area can be one of the most challenging and rewarding choices you’ll ever make. Naturally, when taking a dive into elder home care you want to ensure that your senior loved one receives the best care available; so how do you prepare to become a caregiver? Start by arming yourself with information; use the internet, like you are now, and other home care resources to learn how to deal with the emotional aspects of caregiving.  Seek out additional resources within your local Phoenix community; including caregiver support groups, transportation services, adult day cares and local medical centers. Whether or not you and your senior will require some of the services today, it’s wise to have an understanding of what’s available when you need them.

It’s also important to work with your parents to have all the legal and financial documentation prepared and available should you need to assist them in managing their affairs. Ask them to put together a list of important account numbers and contacts and keep it in a safe and secure place. You don’t need to be savvy to the information today, but it’s a good idea to have it available. You should also ensure that your parents have a living will prepared, so that you can ensure their medical wishes are carried out appropriately if at some point they are unable to speak for themselves.

Do you have enough to retire?

Our blog post features David Parker from Your Reverse Mortgage Resource

I talk with a lot of retirees in my capacity as a loan officer specializing in reverse mortgages. While you would think you could make a simple calculation and figure out a “magic” number it is not that easy.

Lets say your cash flow (income minus expenses) would be positive if you were to retire today. What is the most likely scenario as you age? In almost all cases, your income over time will decrease while your expenses increase.

If you have a pension, will it end for your spouse if you die? 70% of retiring workers pick the higher option that ends when they die. If you die, your spouse also loses the lower of your two social security incomes.

While health care insurance can be obtained cheaply for most retirees this doesn’t cover long-term care done in your home or in an assisted living facility. 20-hour per week non-nursing in-home care can cost at least $1000 per month while assisted living can cost from $3000 to $6000 a month. What is the likelihood you will need that? Can you get family or friends to support you instead? How do you plan for such a large expense? Do you buy long-term care insurance? Can you even get it now?

If you have a new medical condition, it can add up to $800 per month in prescription drug costs. Generic versions of most drugs can be obtained very cheaply but some drugs have no generic versions. How do you plan for that? What about hospital stays? What are the limits to your coverage? When does your family have to start paying?

A reverse mortgage cannot fix all financial woes. It is just a tool to access your equity and help pay for these and other things without messing up your cash flow.

Can a Geriatric Assessment Help Your Senior?

Q – I’m a family caregiver for an elderly grandparent in Phoenix. At the caregiver support group I attend, someone introduced the idea of a geriatric assessment. What does it involve and how could it benefit my grandparent?

A – First of all, it’s very commendable that you are seeking support within your local community from other caregivers, and as I’m sure you’re discovering, they can be great resources to learn about care options in Phoenix. Geriatric assessments can be completed by medical professionals, such as doctors or nurses in a variety of settings, including an outpatient clinic, hospital, or even your grandparent’s home. Often, geriatric assessments are recommended to older adults who are exhibiting signs of confusion, memory loss or dementia; but can be requested by anyone who wants professional insight from a healthcare perspective about improving and forecasting eldercare.

A geriatric assessment involves the following:

• Assessing a senior’s status by looking at physical, mental and psycho-social; factors; their ability to perform activities of daily living independently, and any care they currently receive

• Identifying problems that might be present based on the senior’s status now or in the future

• Developing a “Care Plan” with recommendations for support services

• Helping seniors attain the support they require

• Monitoring the success of the care plan

Is Senior Caregiving Available 24 Hours per Day?

Elder care emergencies can happen at anytime day or night. Unfortunately, senior care issues and medical emergencies just don’t operate on a standard 9-5 schedule. So what do you do if your elderly relative requires care assistance outside of regular business hours?

Many Phoenix senior home care providers offer live-in senior care, which ensures there is a caregiver available to address a senior’s every need 24/7. Others, like Home Instead Senior Care, guarantee that a caregiver is available on call when a senior needs them 24 hours per day. If you believe that the level of care required by a senior loved one requires the availability of 24 hour eldercare, make sure you do your research and ask the right questions when selecting a senior caregiving agency. Look at the rates closely, as some may charge a much greater cost for caregivers who work outside of normal business hours; and if your choice is to hire a live-in caregiver, ensure that background and reference checks are completed so you have a greater guarantee that they are trustworthy.

Obtaining 24 hour care for a senior in Phoenix is a big decision, so don’t take it lightly! Involve your elder in the decision process as appropriate, and be thorough!

What to Look for when Choosing a Caregiving Agency

From reading, you might already be aware of the benefits of hiring an in-home caregiver through a senior care agency, instead of choosing a privately contracted caregiver, but do you know what to look for in a senior care agency when making eldercare decisions for an important senior in your life?

While at face value, many Phoenix senior care agency’s services appear similar in nature. It’s what lies beneath the surface that can help you choose the right agency to provide assisted living services in the home of a senior. Choose a senior care agency that is flexible and provides a wide variety of services. While today, your senior may only need the companionship and transportation to appointments from their caregiver a few times a week; their care needs might increase or change over time. Select a caregiver agency that can adjust and adapt their care plan for your senior when required, and ensure the caregiving agency doesn’t have minimum requirements for time spent at the senior’s home. A good care agency should be available to provide as little care as a few hours a week, to long-term care at 24 hours a day.

A Phoenix caregiving agency should also listen to the needs and concerns of families, and do their utmost to match seniors with caregivers that meet their requirements, while maintaining communication with the family. All good caregiving agencies should also ensure that their caregivers are bonded, insured, thoroughly screened and trained in current eldercare procedures, so that the highest quality of senior care is always achieved.
