Maintain Physical Fitness

Caregiving make physical demands on the body. A good way to deal with the stress is daily exercise. It is important for you to remain as physically active as possible. Not only will this help with mental health, but it will improve general health as well by strengthening muscles and bones and helping improve balance. Here are a few tips to physical fitness.

1.    Make sure to get regular checkups to see if certain exercises should be avoided. Prior to starting a new exercise routine, examine all of the options. You may benefit from a gym membership or it might be better to just walk around the neighborhood.

2.    Decide how to participate in the exercise, such as in a group or alone and at what time of day. Always begin a new routine slowly. This will allow the body time to adjust to a new routine.

3.    Stay motivated by setting goals and working out with a friend. Short and long term goals are important, list out what you wish to accomplish. Then write another list that is used as a reminder of the benefits of exercise.

4.    Consider the costs associated with getting fit. If a membership is not affordable, there are  exercises that can be done at home for no cost. Learn about the staff and trainers.

5.    Consider wearing step counters – this will help to keep you motivated, to keep moving and stay active by counting and the steps you take during a day.

6.    Do as much housework and yard work as possible. This will help with physical fitness. Having a support network of friends and family members will also be beneficial.

7.    Not every senior will be able to perform the same types of exercise, so know limits and be aware of your expected results from exercising. Stop any exercise that causes pain.

8.   Wear good shoes and try to focus on strengthening key muscles, including arms, legs and back muscles.

9.    Keep a journal so you can look back on your progress. Take the time to reward yourself for a job well done. Being physically fit can be a challenge, so even the smallest steps are important.
